Annual Indigenous Graduate Student Symposium (IGSS) – 2020

Event Cancelation Notice | 18th Annual Indigenous Graduate Student Symposium (IGSS)

March 12, 2020 6:50PM

Dear Registrants, Guests, and Presenters,

We regret to inform you that the 2020 IGSS on Saturday, March 14 is being cancelled due to the raising concern about the spread of COVID-19 and updated risk and recommendations from multiple health agencies.

We understand that this cancellation is late notice and may pose an inconvenience; however, this decision is not made lightly and is believed to be in the best interest for our communities.

We want to thank everyone for their continued interest and support for creating spaces like the IGSS. We hope to see everyone at our other SAGE events and at the next IGSS.

Best regards,

The 2020 UBC/SFU IGSS Planning Committee

March 12, 2020, Message on Behalf of the Office of Indigenous Education, Faculty of Education, University of British Columbia

UBC continues to follow closely the evolving situation with the novel coronavirus. The university has paramount concerns about the safety and wellbeing of all in the community and those who visit our campus. This includes consideration of planned events such as the Indigenous Graduate Student Symposium.

For the time being, UBC is continuing with usual practices and the IGSS event will go ahead as planned, with the exception of the end of day Indigenous alumni networking session from 3:30 to 5:30. That portion of the event will be re-scheduled for a later date. This will shorten the schedule of the day.

The keynote speaker, Dr. Wilson, will be featured in Sty-wet-tan hall. Following that all presentations will be held in different spaces, which include the Xwi Xwa Library Boardroom, Ponderosa F classroom, and the Sty-wet-tan. This will create some distancing during the conference. Further, we will be only be providing boxed-lunches.

Some of you may be grappling with decisions of whether to participate in the day. We encourage you to follow the advice conveyed here:
