SAGE – Supporting Aboriginal Graduate Enhancement – is an initiative of the Faculty of Education at UBC. In partnership with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, we extend this Indigenous mentoring initiative across all faculty programs at UBC-Vancouver, as well the UBC-Okanagan campus, to enhance peer mentoring for Indigenous graduate students. This program supports Indigenous graduate students to make significant social change using research, Indigenous knowledges, and community-oriented approaches in their graduate program of study.
SAGE Goals are to:
- Increase the numbers of PhD and EdD Indigenous students and graduates
- Assist all Indigenous students transitioning to master’s and doctoral programs
- Develop graduates with a cultural and community consciousness to positively affect change within Indigenous communities
- Support the academic success and cultural affirmation of students by linking their academic graduate research with culturally-informed mentors, including faculty, knowledge keepers, alumni, and SAGE Coordinator(s)
- Establish and encourage mentorship pods and cohorts across the province in other post-secondary institutions
- Create network opportunities and community- building for graduate students participating within and among pods/cohorts
- Collaborate with post-secondary institutions across Canada and beyond to foster new SAGE opportunities on national and international levels.
- Provide forums to engage with Indigenous mentors and present scholarly work
The SAGE program operates on the principles of respect, reciprocity, relationships, and responsibility.
