Squamish Nation’s Lilian Jones is currently working towards her Doctorate in the Faculty of Education at UBC. Her area of focus is Trauma-Informed Practices for Teachers. Although Lilian is working hard to obtain her PhD, she already holds three degrees. She has completed her Bachelor of Arts with a major in First Nations Studies and a minor in English, as well as her post-bacc and Masters both in Education. Once her PhD is complete, Lilian sees herself “as a humble, confident, loving vessel in Indigenous education”. She is inspired by her parents who encourage her to continue healing her wounds, so that she may become a whole authentic person who can be of service to others. Lilian say “[she is] interested in creating space for [herself] and all others to be the best [they] can be”.
Outside of her passion for education, Lilian is a loving mother and grandmother. She enjoys watching movies, her favourite being Dances with Wolves, and reading books. Her favourite study snack is canned salmon and broccoli. When studying for exams Lilian like to write down key points as is helps solidify them in her mind.
Lilianis grateful to be a UBC student. “UBC is cutting edge; it’s complimentary to who I am as an Indigenous Woman.”
