SAGE (Supporting Aboriginal Graduate Enhancement) Provincial Coordinator and UBC Indigenous Graduate Student Mentor

SAGE is looking for a highly motivated Indigenous graduate student to support leadership, communication, and Indigenous graduate development activities in the role of SAGE Provincial Coordinator and UBC Indigenous Graduate Student Mentor. In addition, this role will support the expansion of SAGE across Faculties, Units, and a broader range of disciplines across UBC-Vancouver and UBC-Okanagan Campus.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate SAGE graduate support events per term (e.g., SAGE Saturdays) via technology platforms and face-to-face meetings
  • Work with OIE staff assigned to Graduate initiatives on SAGE activates and SAGE Faculty mentor with the expansion of SAGE across UBC faculties, units, and disciplines at both UBC-Vancouver and UBC-Okanagan campus through a range of outreach activities
  • Creating monthly SAGE Digest (September through May) with relevance across disciplines and faculties (digest includes conferences, employment opportunities, resources, relevant info)
  • Liaise between Vancouver SAGE and other SAGE pods in the province and beyond BC to (re)establish networks
  • Assist with Indigenous graduate recruitment activities hosted by the Office of Indigenous Education, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Graduate and Post-Doctoral Studies and the Faculty of Education at UBC- Vancouver campus
  • Outreach with Indigenous and ally faculty to support Indigenous graduate student development
  • Coordinate with communications to support the SAGE website with content, news, events
  • Manage and communicate activities of the SAGE list-serve and participate in Vancouver SAGE meetings via technology platforms
  • Co-Chair, or assist designate, the Indigenous Graduate Student Symposium (IGSS) including the Planning Events.

Organizational Status:
SAGE is a province-wide, inter-institutional, peer/faculty Indigenous support mentoring program. This is a part-time contract role reporting to the Faculty of Education’s Office of Indigenous Education (OIE). The incumbent will be reporting to the Associate Dean, Indigenous Education and work closely with the OIE staff assigned to OIE Indigenous graduate initiatives.  The successful applicant will work collaboratively with the Faculty of Graduate + Postdoctoral Studies and SAGE Faculty Mentor.


Qualifications:

  • Graduate student grounded in Indigenous worldviews and lived experiences
  • Strong verbal communication skills with students, staff, and faculty
  • Familiarity with UBC graduate student structures and UBC Indigenous supports
  • Familiarity with technology platforms such as Zoom to host events and meetings
  • Strong Written Skills
  • Digital and social media skills (twitter and other social media platforms)
  • Attention to detail
  • Good organization, planning and prioritization skills
  • Experience working in a collaborative, team environment; developing positive relationships with students, staff, and faculty
  • Demonstrates flexibility in planning
  • Experience with event planning is an asset

Terms of the appointment include: 12/hours/week @ $28.00 @ 24 weeks (September to March)
