Staff Stories: Meet Shelly Liu

Where are you from?

I am from the northern part of China.

 

What is your favourite place on campus?

I would say UBC Rose Garden and Nitobe Memorial Garden. I’d like to go for a walk.

 

What are your favourite snacks to get on campus?

Loafe café and Deli Sandwich! I also like Seoul Hotdogs.

 

Can you tell us one thing you love to do when you’re off work?

I love travelling, hiking, and watching movies!

  

What do you like best about being a part of the OIE?

Everyone is approachable and we are like a family. I feel really motivated to work here!

 

What do you enjoy most about your job?

One of the most fulfilling aspects of my job is being able to assist others, whether it’s answering questions, solving problems, or providing support in various ways. Helping others can give me a sense of purpose and satisfaction in my work.

Besides, I love the Wellness Program on Tuesdays. I really enjoyed the time here and like this kind of gathering.

 

What strategies did you use to be successful in university?

One is Effective time management. This can include creating a schedule or to-do list, setting priorities, and avoiding procrastination.

The other is Active learning. Engage in active learning strategies, such as taking notes, participating in class discussions, and asking questions.

 

What are the advice and resources you would recommend for helping Indigenous students be successful?

Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you are struggling with coursework. This might include seeking help from professors, teaching assistants, academic advisors, or tutoring services. If there is anything I can help with, please do not hesitate to ask.
